The Social Kitchen Archives - Megan Taylor

The Social Kitchen – Supper Club

Dani got in touch with me earlier in the year to tell me about her book The Social Kitchen and sent me a copy. The Social Kitchen is a book by Dani in memory of her mother and is a beautiful charity book. All of the books profits go to Dermatrust so please head on over to buy a copy of the book for yourself here or here.  I received my copy just before a big street party that I was going to in my road. All of the recipes in the book are perfect for social events so I made a few yummy recipes from the book for the party and they went down a treat. Last week Dani sent Liam and I an invitation for a supper club event that she was holding in Maida Vale and we couldn’t resist making sure we were free. We headed along to The Elgin where Dani had taken over the top floor to create her twinkly social kitchen wonderland. The amount of work that Dani had put into this event was breath taking.

The Concept
Dani’s concept is all about social eating. With two long tables and a whole lot of strangers there were no set places at the table, you could pick and choose where you wanted to sit. The drinks had a whole table of their own. Bottles of drinks were bobbing around in giant zinc troughs for you to pick and choose from. The food was sprawled across two sides of the room immaculately presented and decorated. Each dish was carefully labelled along with the page number from the book where you could find the recipe.

The Decor
The tables and the room were beautifully presented. There were long-stemmed candles lit all down the long tables. The tables were adorned with clustered ribbons, sparkling gems and flowers. Everything felt like a fairytale.

The Food
Wow…where do I start with the food. Dani knew I was vegetarian and kindly acknowledged my, “no food with a face” policy and had so much to offer for a vegetarian. In my family I am a renowned fussy eater yet I was in heaven and loved everything on offer.

The Goodie Bag
If the food, drink and chat weren’t enough for you, there were even goodie bags on each chair for every guest filled to the brim with beauty products and edible goodies. See my picture below for a glimpse into what was in the bag.

The whole Supper Club event is one that everyone must experience. I felt like I was experiencing a magical event that only a few select people knew about, yet I feel like everyone needs to know about. Keep an eye out for Dani’s next Supper Club by following her on Instagram.
Everything that Dani stands for is wonderful and if like me you have a very large social family this cookbook is a must have for you.

The cookbooks you need to own right now

My last cookbook list was a rather healthy affair. You can find it here. This time I have created more of a mixture, from the relatively unhealthy to the healthiest of vegan goods. Below I have listed and reviewed the cookbooks you need to own right now.

The Social Kitchen
I was sent this book in the post and was really excited as it was already on my list of books to buy. In fact their Instagram is worth following for all the gorgeous food pictures. The idea behind the cookbook stems from a heartbreaking story about the loss of their mother who was always making a lot of food for the huge amount of friends and family that were always in their house. This is great for my family as there are always loads of us eating together. My mum and I read the opening of the book and after learning what the strands of ribbons in each and every book signified we were both in tears.

Favourite Recipe(s)
Custard Biscuits – I love these biscuits. They are quick, easy and fun to make and you can make so many in one go.
Hasselback Potatoes – These potatoes are a wonderful talking point at a party as they look so peculiar. I recently made them for a street party.

These decadent flapjacks are divine. I need some right now.

Deliciously Ella – Every Day
I have talked about how much I like Ella’s approach to vegan living. All her recipes are simple and achievable to make. Even though her recipes are yummy they are very healthy. To top off Ella’s healthy lifestyle, all her recipes are animal friendly which makes me very happy.
