WHY YOU SHOULD DITCH YOUR MOISTURISER FOR A SERUM

WHY YOU SHOULD DITCH YOUR MOISTURISER FOR A SERUM | Megan Taylor

I used to be a moisturiser obsessive. I made the move to a serum from a moisturiser once I had finished my course of Roaccutane. At this time I was left with a little bit of scarring around my jaw line. With my mum’s advice (mum was named an “Aromatherapy Guru” by Vogue!!…yeah, you should trust her opinion!) I realised that I needed to massage my scars with mandarinessential oil and rosehip. At the time my mums company made a serum which was certified 100% organic and was full of the essential oils I needed. Needless to say the redness and scarring disappeared and I was completely spotless. Five years later I have only used a serum and have only had one major spot, on my lip…but that was a result of Christmas indulgence. Carry on reading to find out a little bit more on why you too will love using a serum/face oil.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

You are probably wondering why I stopped using moisturiser and why I am so obsessed with serums. A serum or face oil is basically a moisturiser full of only active ingredients and without any fillers and bulking agents (take my advice below on which brands you should opt for). Serums are full of fabulous essential oils and carrier oils which are placed in there for a reason. Each of those oils has a purpose and reason for being there. A moisturiser can never be labelled as 100% organic so do not believe it if it says it is (The Soil Association would never certify something as 100% organic if there was any water in it).  You don’t have to go 100% organic but what is fabulous with a serum is that there is no need for the brand to include a preservative like a moisturiser has to. Once you start using a face oil, you’ll never go back.

OILY SKIN LOVES OILS!

It is commonly thought that oily skin hates oils but this can’t be further from the truth. In fact, if you banish oils completely your skin will produce more oil/sebum to make up for it. So, drying out your skin is not what you want to do. Once you have used an oil for a short while, your skin will rebalance itself to perfection. If you do have oily skin, opt for a lighter oil such as peach kernal, cherry kernal and camelia which has amazing oil regulating properties. Another amazing benefit to using a serum is that applying your foundation on top of a serum is incredible. Blending your make up is an absolute dream.
